Warren Haynes of Gov’t Mule gives a great interview on the current state of the band, their new album By A Thread and the joy of improvisation.
What particularly resonated with me was the importance he places on finding ones influences and then taking it a step further.
I think it’s an unspoken responsibility. When I was learning how to play, I had my first few guitar heroes and I’d read interviews with those people and see who they listened to and listen to that list of people. So, it’s going backwards into a family tree. When you discover someone who was SO influential over so much music it’s eye opening.
People often ask me how I find the music I do, and the family tree metaphor is a perfect one to explain how I do it. Each artist is inexplicably linked to and born from others. From each leaf, the process of tracing around that tree to the various branches has proven to be one of the most rewarding experiences as a music lover – and the impetus for discovering some of my favorites, including Gov’t Mule.
