Today would normally be my regularly scheduled bi-weekly chemotherapy but when I got there they determined that my most recent blood work showed my white cell counts were too low and that I needed a shot to boost them up before I could get my treatment. They also put me on an antibiotic and told me to wear a mask over my mouth when leaving my house. It’s scary to think about how suppressed my immune system must be for them to be this concerned for my general health.
My biggest concern is that this just pushes everything back at least a week. I’m looking at end of July now for end of chemo treatments and any further delays are likely to push my reversal surgery on to next year.
I did get some chocolates from my friend Christelle today though so that was good. It’s nice to know people are thinking about me and wishing me well.
I had some chemo related nausea after my first treatment so Gina made me some candied ginger which is supposed to help ease it. I’ve got a good supply ready for next week. It’s very strong and hopefully more healthy than the store bought variety.
Find the recipe here.
Busy baking day at the Blitstein family kitchen today. Strawberry Scones and some Nutella filled PopTarts. I had a bit of trouble with the dough at first but they ended up coming out just fine.
Chocolate chip next time I’m thinking.
“Oh, this is the best cake in a cup ever. This guy is unbelievable. He ran the old Cup ‘o Cake guy out of business. People come from all over to eat this.”
Navin R. Johnson – The Jerk
Ok – so maybe I paraphrased it. In any case, it’s super quick and easy to make, resembles cake and tastes very cake-like. Ree Drummond’s recipe is here.
Food as Art: Cloud 9 Confections, a local bakery, makes artfully decorated cookies and obscenely decadent cupcakes. For someone who makes food to be eaten, not viewed, I am in awe of such talent.
I mixed up a batch of our homemade Irish Cream this evening. Since it takes a bit to chill I also poured us a nice glass to sip while we wait.
Can I pour one for you?
Gina made her homemade sour cream coffee cake. It has this amazing crumble inside it and the cake itself is just perfect. It smells and tastes even better than it looks.
um – I really have no words.
Can you tell I’m quite looking forward to Conan’s triumphant return to late night tv…
